I chanced upon this iceberg as its arch periodically cracked and pieces of it crumbled into the water and floated towards the boat I was on. Each time the arch broke it sounded like a gunshot echoing across the bay.

Scientists have warned that the Arctic is warming at a rate that is faster than anywhere else on the planet. It is estimated that Greenland is losing about three times more ice than it did every year before the turn of this past century. Currently, Greenland is the largest contributor to sea level rise (even more than Antarctica). In other words, as far as climate change is concerned, Greenland is considered an area of extreme scientific importance (aka "Ground Zero").

This iceberg was immense; this is only the smaller, right half. The biggest of the small icebergs in front of it was probably half the size of the 20 person boat I was on.
